Configuring nagios plugin for Mozilla Firefox.

Due to the popularity that people displayed over the nagios plugin for Mozilla Firefox, I thought I would write a short step-by-step guide to configure it. It is a very easy process, but extra documentation never hurt anyone, I think.

  • First, install the nagios plugin per the links in the post here.
  • After you install the plugin and restart Firefox, goto its preferences panel. You do this by going to Tools, then to Add-ons.
  • If it is your first time configuring this plugin, choose to add a new connection. Name the connection whatever you would like. For the “Nagios web interface url” enter the URL where you go to view the tactical overview. For example, you would enter http://nagios.server.com/ if that is the URL you would use to log into the nagios web interface. This step should also require you enter a username and password – this is your username and password as managed by Apache – or whatever other web server you’re using.
  • Lastly, we need to configure where the status.cgi script is located. If you have not moved or renamed the cgi-bin that nagios uses, then you can use the same “Nagios web interface url” as the base URL. For example, use http://nagios.server.com/nagios/cgi-bin/status.cgi. I had to enter this value into “Locate url” form for this plugin to locate it.

At this point, you should be able to restart Firefox and see your nagios plugin working – mine is in the bottom right hand corner of my status bar. Remember, to see it you need to goto View and opt to see the “Status Bar”. The remainder of the configuration options are really just bells and whistles that really do make the experience more enjoyable.
